In essence, the tale tells of Little River Turtle's adventures when, forgetting his
mother's advice, he follows a beautiful butterfly into the desert. There, sobbing
and alone, he encounters Coyote who desires to learn to sing like Little River
Turtle. He cannot teach Coyote to sing however, because as he explains, he is
not singing, but crying. Eventually the brave little turtle is returned to the river and
Coyote slinks off, practicing his 'song' and howling at the moon from that day to
this.

... I began writing about the experiences I had with Caleb. I had started a letter to
Mom. I didn't know if she and I would have a relationship in the future, but after
what I'd experienced in the past few weeks, I believed that anything was possible.

Then Turtle began to feign terror and wail, "Oh, don't do that, that's what I am
afraid of." --- "Oh, then that's what we shall do with you!" cried the enemy. So they
grabbed him by the tail and legs and dragged him, kicking and struggling, down
to the river, where they threw him in. This was what he wanted. There were two
young girls undergoing their puberty-fast together in a little lodge out in the
woods. That night Snapping Turtle crawled out of the water and went there. He

Forthcoming field work includes time on Lake Superior for a Pukaswka South
map and the White Otter Lake–Turtle River region of northwestern Ontario. “Ahhh
, what a country,” they would say. Pause to consider all the places mentioned
here. There are stories aplenty when you seek the details on the landscape as
they do. The nooks and crannies of a landscape must be mapped. Christine was
aglow telling me about bison encounters in Elk Island Provincial Park, Alberta.

Mike crawled inside the Grandmother Tree to lie down, wet and soggy, just as I
had been some twentyodd years before, to be comforted and quieted in her
bosom. A short time later we made our way back to Big Lake Shack, where I
presented Mike with a wellworn snappingturtle shell. I pointed out the thirteen
parts to its shell, and he asked me how this came to be. I explained that it
involved a legend about a snapping turtle hitching a ride to the south with a pair
of Canada geese.

Turtles, river otter, bald eagle, osprey, green heron, blue heron, garter snake,
deer ... all, check. Later, as we drag the boats up to the car, I reflect on the human
infrastructure that was required to allow me to enjoy this wilderness. Cars, gas,
rubbers, plastics, and a sinuous serpentine asphalt ribbon. It's paradoxical, and
uniquely human. The artificial gets me closer to the natural. It's a paradox, but
also a balance. Preserving wild areas provides that balance. How the California

NE AFTERNOON, A pig decided to visit his cousin the turtle who lived just across
the river. He got into his pirogue and paddled to the other side. There he spent a
long and enjoyable visit with his cousin. The day he left, the pig said: “My dear
cousin, please lend me your shell because I have no container to carry my water
from the river.” The turtle, a very kind animal, granted the pig's request. After a few
months, the turtle felt like visiting his cousin the pig. Upon his arrival, he was ...
