For a full picture of SNCC to appear, a good deal more work needs to be done to
persuade activists, especially African American women, to tell their own stories.
One particularly valuable effort, spearheaded by Judy Richardson, Martha
Norman, Betty Garman Robinson, and Dottie Zellner, is a collection called “
Hands on the Freedom Plow: The Untold Story of Women in SNCC” (manuscript).
Until these stories surface, our collective understanding will necessarily be
incomplete. 58.
