Beginning with Yuka, a 39,000 year old mummified woolly mammoth recently found in the Siberian permafrost, each of the 16 essays in Animals Strike Curious Poses investigates a different famous animal named and immortalized by humans. Modeled loosely after a medieval bestiary, these witty, playful, whipsmart essays traverse history, myth, science, and more, bringing each beast vibrantly to life.

From Farinelli, the eighteenth century castrato who brought down opera houses with his high C, to the recording of "Johnny B. Goode" affixed to the Voyager spacecraft, Let Me Clear My Throat dissects the whys and hows of popular voices, making them hum with significance and emotion. There are murders of punk rock crows, impressionists, and rebel yells; Howard Dean's "BYAH!" and Marlon Brando's "Stella!" and a stock film yawp that has made cameos in movies from A Star is Born to Spaceballs. The voice is thought's incarnating instrument and Elena Passarello's essays are a riotous deconstruction of the ways the sounds we make both express and shape who we are—the annotated soundtrack of us giving voice to ourselves.

Elena Passarello is an actor and writer originally from Charleston, South Carolina. She studied nonfiction at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Iowa, and her essays have appeared in Creative Nonfiction, Gulf Coast, Slate, Iowa Review, The Normal School, Literary Bird Journal, Ninth Letter, and in the music writing anthology Pop Till the World Falls Apart. She has performed in several regional theaters in the East and Midwest, originating roles in the premieres of Christopher Durang's Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge and David Turkel's Wild Signs and Holler. In 2011 she became the first woman winner of the annual Stella Screaming Contest in New Orleans.

On September 21, 2012, twenty-five year old David Villalobos purchased a pass for the Bronx Zoo and a ticket for a ride on the Bengali Express Monorail. Biding his time, he waited until the monorail was just near the enclosure of a four hundred pound Siberian tiger named Bashuta before leaping into it. They spent ten long minutes together in the tiger’s cage before nature took its course, with one exception: The tiger did not kill him. David’s only response: “It’s a spiritual thing. I wanted to be at one with the tiger.”

One with The Tiger: On Savagery and Intimacy uses David’s story, and other moments of violent encounters between humans and predators, to explore the line between human and animal. Exposing what the author defines as the “shared liminal space between peace and violence,” Church posits that the animal is always encroaching on the civilization —and those seeking its wildness are in fact searching for an ecstatic moment that can define what it means to be human. Using examples from Timothy Treadwell to Mike Tyson, or such television icons as Grizzly Adams and The Incredible Hulk, Church shows how this ecstasy can seep its way into the less natural world of popular culture, proving time and again that each of us can be our own worst predator.

The canine species is affected by genetic diseases-hereditary, and is recognized as the most animal species affected by hereditary diseases after the man. For this reason, the branch of veterinary medicine dedicated to study of genetic diseases has gained importance in recent years growing for the safety of many dog breeds.

In particular, in the canine species group of genetic diseases that affect the eye in its various facilities (retina, lens, etc.) is of primary interest, both for the very high number of diseases included in this group, both for the high spread that some of these diseases have reached in some breeds, both the lack, in many cases, effective therapies. Also, genetic diseases of the eye are breed-specific; This means that the mutations responsible for clinically similar diseases have genetic causes behind them very different. It is a clear example the PRA (progressive retinal atrophy), which is a disease that, while manifesting with clinical symptoms similar to all races, has genetic basis totally different in different breeds recognized as suffering.

How to properly focus the problem and define criteria by which diseases congenital and hereditary kidney should be the approach?
A little argument the Treaty and perhaps not adequately known in Nephrology hips are kidney diseases congenital and hereditary, defined as "family." Often faces the problem talking immediately Renal Dysplasia, using a term, "dysplasia," to which we are very used the approach to disease skinny. This definition is not only incorrect because the term dysplasia is applied to a well-defined number of problems (as explained below), but the term itself is not particularly recent and dates back to a 1987 work (Picut and Lewis, 156-163 24: Vet. Pathol.). To create further confusion, there is also the fact that Commerce operates a test genetic would presume to define that renal dysplasia. Too bad it's a non-validated test and especially not recognized in science.
The purpose of this column is to properly focus the problem and define criteria by which these types of diseases should be approached. Congenital (present at birth), hereditary causes (genetically derived) or family (a trait present in a pack of dogs related) may underlie the evolution of chronic kidney disease (or chronic kidney disease, CKD) and some breeds may be particularly affected.
